電灯の無かった時代、枕もとに置いて夜通し灯していた行灯。 提げ手が付いて持ち歩きもできます。
覆っている鞘（さや）は、正面や側面が違ったカタチで型抜かれ、その向きを変えて光の量を調整したそうです。前面の窓から十文字の桟を上に上げれば、容易に油の注ぎ足しなどできるようになっています。こちらは鞘の上部に本体を連結することができるので、背の高い角行灯としての機能も持っています。
※経年による汚れやイタミも多少ありますが、いい味わいです。

Ariake Andon – Traditional Japanese Oil Lantern
Before the advent of electric lighting, andon lanterns like this were placed beside the pillow and kept lit throughout the night. This piece is equipped with a handle, making it portable for use around the home.

The outer saya (sheath) features decorative cutouts of varying shapes on each side, allowing the user to control the light by rotating its position. The front panel includes a cross-barred window that lifts upward, enabling easy access for refilling oil and maintenance.

This particular model has a rare design feature: the main body can be extended by attaching it to the top of the sheath, transforming it into a tall square lantern (kaku andon).

While it shows some natural aging, wear, and minor stains, these contribute to its charming patina and antique character.
